Minutes 10-22-2007

The Glacial Hills elementary School Board met on October 22, 2007 at Glacial Hills Elementary School.  President Lara Amundson called the meeting to order at 7:04.  Board members present were Lara Amundson, Nancy Rapp, Ernie Watson, Kurt Amundson, Vanessa Larson, Joy Peterson, and Kurt Swensrud. 

Board member absent was Mike Scott.  Also present were Jayne Schwalbach, Chad Kroenen, and Kim Embretson.

A motion was made by Joy and second by Kurt to amend the agenda: change the date of the Audubon retreat and not to review the budget at this time.  The motion carried.

A motion was made by Kurt S. and second by Joy to approve the minutes of the regular and special meeting.  The motion carried.

 

Dyanne Parson report:

-           Sept. 25th-  MN Public Radio came and did an interview about the school which aired and is also on their website.

-          Sept. 27th-  5th/6th grade field trip to Conservation Day in Morris, the use of a van was donated.

-          Sept. 29th-  Students performed at Eple Tiden.

-          Oct. 3rd-  Gene Piccolo from MN Association of Charter Schools came to visit.  He was very impressed with how the building has been converted.

-          Oct. 9th- First fire drill went very well.  The alarm is not load enough, and have contacted the fire detect and alarm in Alexandria.

-          Oct. 11th-  5th and 6th grade did ditch clean up from Cenex to Hanley Mortenson’s home.

-          Oct. 12th-  The entire school attended the play “Flying Colors” at Central Square.

-          Oct. 17th-  Held our second fire drill with the help of the Starbuck Fire Department.  Four firemen came and talked to the students about fire safety. 

-          Oct. 18th and 19th-  ME break

-          Oct. 20th-  GHES Fall Family Picnic at Jason and Ann Major’s home.

-          Oct. 24th and 25th- Hearing and vision screening

-          Oct. 25th- Students will be visiting Wilson’s Farm to harvest pumpkins and potatoes in the afternoon.

-          Oct. 30th-  Picture Day

-          Oct. 31st-  Fall Costume Parties for students beginning at 2:00.

-          November 1- evening conferences

-          November 2- no school, conferences

Old Business:

-           Kim Embretson from West Central Initiative talked to the board about their fund programs and the reasons to continue using WCI for depositing gifts or donations from the community.

-          We have received the donation of the bus.  It is currently being worked on by Hagen Repair in Glenwood.  Only minor repairs are needed.

-          The library is up and running.

-          The STAR Reading and Math testing are complete.  We are planning to use the MAP assessments this winter and spring and the MCA’s are given in the spring.

New Business:

-           A motion was made by Kurt Swensrud and second by Joy to approve the payment of the bills.

-          It was decided to table the decision about advertising with KMGK during the Minnewaska sporting event coverage.  The board would like to know the amount of games that are covered during the monthly charge.

-          The Audubon training will be November 9th.  A motion was made by Ernie and second by Kurt Swensrud to approve up to 8 people to go.  The motion carried.

-          Jennifer Nelson has donated an AED to the school including an alarmed cabinet.  Our cost will be 90 dollars a year for the battery and pads.  There will be training for CPR/AED and an email will be sent to the staff regarding the times and dates.

-          MaryKay Frederickson is applying for the targeted services grant for afterschool.

-          At this time there are no volunteers available for the foster grandparent program.  

 

Policies:

-          There were no policies ready for the meeting.

Other Business:

-           Joy reported on the parent committee meeting:

o         The quilt raffle tickets have been given to Glenwood businesses and soon will be out in Starbuck after more tickets are printed.  Families will receive 1 package of raffle tickets to sell. 

o         Working with Dave’s Place for a pizza night

o         Working with Star Lanes for bowling night where half the proceeds will go to the school.

o         Started a 4H club and the first meeting will be the 29th at MLH Commons

o         Have volunteers for conferences, but need to know what they are to do.

o         Have volunteers for the classrooms, but need from the teachers times and tasks.

o          

Nancy will ask Dyanne about doing Trick or Treat through the downtown businesses.

A special meeting will be held Monday October 29th at 7:00 at Glacial Hills Elementary to discuss the budget.

The next meeting date was set for November 26th.

A motion was made by Kurt Swensrud and second by Vanessa to adjourn the meeting.  The motion carried.  The meeting ended at 8:05.
