Director - Deb Mathias
My husband, Luke, and I have been very blessed to be a part of the Glacial Hills family since November 2008. Luke is retired. We have two children, Dylan and Alison, and one granddaughter, Kori May.
I graduated from Southwest State University in Marshall with a BS in Elementary Education. I also earned a MA degree in English and a 6th year certification in Educational Administration from Minnesota State University - Mankato. I am licensed in all those areas. Before coming to GHES I spent 15 years working in the Heron Lake - Okabena School District. I held various positions which included elementary classroom teacher, English as a Second Language teacher, Elementary Administrative TEAM, District Activities Director and I coached volleyball, basketball, and softball.
In my spare time I love to read...mysteries, biographies, fiction, non-fiction, historical fiction...you get the picture! I also love to spend time with my family and will take any opportunity that arises to travel. I also enjoy quilting!
Being employed as the Director of Glacial Hills Elementary fulfills a goal I set in third grade to become a teacher and then an administrator. Thanks to the influence of several very caring and dedicated kindergarten - second grade teachers, I knew that one day I, too, would become a teacher. I believe that every student has the ability to learn and should be given the right tools to succeed. Each student is an individual and brings to the world a uniqueness that we must foster. Empowering children to make good choices and take ownership of those choices is a priority if we are to develop understanding and educated adults.
